The American Legion is the country's largest veterans service organization, with 2.4 million members who work every day on behalf of the men and women who have served our nation in uniform. Helm said U.S.-led air strikes against ISIS militants in Syria this week amplify our nation's need to protect the Department of Defense from drastic budget cuts and force reductions.         "The air-strike strategy is certainly an effective way to kill the enemy and destroy its war-fighting capabilities, at least in the short term," Helm said. Shooting Event for Combat and Disabled Veterans - this weekend in Lansing

Dear Friend, The MSU Demmer Center, a U.S. Paralympic Training Center, is hosting a free 22 caliber practice shooting day at their center to include equipment, ammo and targets this Saturday, September 20 with the tournament being held for participants on Sunday, September 21. This is open to all combat and disabled Veterans. 2014 Fall Veterans and Service Members Pheasant Hunts

2014 Veterans Fall Pheasant Hunts   The Safari Club International's Lansing, Flint, and South East Michigan Bow Hunters Chapters, along with the Pheasants Forever Ingham & Livingston County Chapters, and numerous other sponsors and donors, are all joining forces with the Brain Injury Association of Michigan Veterans Program, the Michigan Chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and Camp Liberty to host free Veteran & Military Service Members "Pheasant Hunts."  To Register you must contact Rick Briggs at veterans@biami.org with  all the information required below.   September 26-29, 2014 (Friday-Monday): The Tails-A- Waggin'Acres hunts are for 30 Veterans and Service Members each day. It will consist of about 5 pheasants per gun in a walk-up hunt with dog work, bird cleaning and lunch. Either lead or steel shot are allowed. Check in is from 8:00am – 4:00pm; 8-10 hunters every two hours.  Chuck Connell is the contact at Tails-A-Waggin' Acres.  C

Legion welcomes overdue change to PTSD discharge guidelines

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE   Legion welcomes overdue change to PTSD discharge guidelines   The new guidelines will help veterans who left the military with undiagnosed PTSD   WASHINGTON (Sept. 4, 2014) -- The Department of Defense issued supplemental guidelines on Sept. 3, that will help its review boards when considering petitions for discharge upgrades from veterans claiming they had post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at the time of separation. The guidelines, issued in a memo from Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, will be used by DoD's Military Department Boards for Correction of Military/Naval Records. They will help in considering whether servicemembers suffered from PTSD while on active duty, and if that condition may have contributed to their discharges under other-than-honorable conditions.
