American Legion supports legislation affecting nearly 1 million small business owners

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE American Legion supports legislation affecting nearly 1 million small business owners (Washington) The American Legion applauds legislation drafted by Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., that would include veterans in the Department of Transportation's Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program. "This legislation is necessary to provide parity for the nearly 1 million veterans who are small business owners seeking government contracts," said James Oxford, chairman of the Legion's Veterans Employment and Education Commission. "Veterans should not be placed at a disadvantage in competing with other government procurement programs." It is incorrect to believe that the DBE program is relegated to road and infrastructure firms. According to the Small Business Administration, veterans own 380,395 construction firms, 64,542 manufacturing companies and 414,519 businesses in the professional, scientific and technical s

American Legion National Commander: Pause Import of Syrian Refugees

Legion National Commander: Pause Import of Syrian Refugees INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 19, 2015) –  Concerned about the threats represented by ISIS and other jihadists, the head of the nation's largest veterans organization has called for at least a temporary halt to White House plans to allow thousands of  Syrian refugees to enter the United States. "Unless a flawless vetting process can be established, The American Legion supports a pause in any process which seeks to accept an increase of refugees from the Middle East and Southwest Asia and anywhere anti-Americanism is suspected in the interest of national security," said American Legion National Commander Dale Barnett. "The American Legion maintains compassion for refugees; however the United States must ensure without any doubt that those who seek to destroy our American way of life are not hiding among innocent refugees. There are still too many unanswered questions about what led to the cowardly and he

#Veterans Day Editorial: War, Sacrifice and America's Veterans

Image
War, Sacrifice and America's Veterans By Dale  Barnett While we can all rejoice this Veterans Day that the steady flow of U.S. casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan has slowed to a trickle, we must never forget the incredible sacrifice that America's defenders continue to make on our behalf. Such is the case of Master Sergeant Joshua Wheeler, who died leading a Delta Force rescue mission of ISIS hostages held in Iraq on Oct. 22.  A veteran of 14 combat deployments, his sacrifice is shared by four boys who are now fatherless and his wife, who became a widow far too early. But another important part of his legacy are the 70 hostages who were spared brutal executions by an enemy that is as ruthless as any that America has faced.
