Korean War Armistice Ceremony, July 25, 5:30 p.m. , Henry Ford Centennial Library Auditorium

The Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council (DAWVC) and a variety of Korean-American organizations will commemorate the 62 th anniversary of the Korean War armistice at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 25 in the auditorium of the Henry Ford Centennial Library, 16301 Michigan Avenue.   The public is invited to the ceremony and to a free reception afterwards at Dearborn's Polish Legion of American Veterans, #75.   This is the 15 th year for the event, which honors those who served in the military during the Korean War. It will be led by John Ruselowski, chairman of the organizing committee and a Korean War veteran.   "Every year, I'm moved by the support for this commemoration and the bond that is so evident between our American veterans and the South Korean representatives. We pause to pay respect to those who gave their lives in this war to stop communist aggression," Ruselowski said. "This is a night of thanks, gratitude an

Op-ed by American Legion National Commander Mike Helm

The following opinion/editorial by National Commander Michael D. Helm appeared in the Montgomery Advertiser, Cedar Rapids Gazette and other publications. Deep defense cuts dangerous, irresponsible Michael D. Helm 8:30 p.m. CDT July 14, 2015   CONNECT 1 TWEET LINKEDIN COMMENTEMAILMORE The government rationale for the latest round of defense cuts is sequestration. I prefer to call it abdication. After the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, politicians often accused one another of having a "pre-9/11 mentality." Yet now, with the executive branch controlled by the Democrats and the legislative branch controlled by the Republicans, we are cutting our military to pre-World War II levels. I have been visiting U.S. military bases around the globe. Just last month a three-star general asked me "What's it going to take for people to wake up, Paris burning?" And this was before ISIS-inspired terrorist attacks on three continents in a s

#Legion National Commander: Report of deaths while waiting for VA Care 'mind-boggling'

Report of deaths while waiting for VA Care 'mind-boggling' says American Legion National Commander   WASHINGTON (July 14, 2015) –  Calling an internal Veterans Affairs report that states that 238,647 veterans died while waiting for VA health care "extremely disturbing," the leader of the nation's largest veterans organization said Congress and the White House need to decrease wait times and improve record keeping. "I don't know how accurate that number is," American Legion National Commander Michael D. Helm said of the report, which was first obtained by the Huffington Post. "I do know that if it's even close to that, it is mind-boggling. Of course, dying while on a waiting list doesn't mean the same as dying because of a waiting list. We do know that by virtue of their service to this country, veterans deserve high quality medical care in a timely manner. The American Legion had members of our national staff meet with VA's

#American Legion to Congress, White House: ‘Army Cuts are lunacy’

Legion to Congress, White House: 'Army Cuts are lunacy'   WASHINGTON (July 9, 2015) –  "Absolute lunacy," is how the leader of the nation's largest veterans service organization characterized plans to reduce the U.S. Army by another 40,000 troops. "After the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, politicians often accused one another of having a 'pre-9/11 mentality,'" American Legion National Commander Michael D. Helm said today. "Yet now we are cutting our military to pre-World War II levels. This is not just absolute lunacy, it's a complete disregard of the constitutionally-mandated responsibilities that our elected leaders in both parties have sworn to uphold. Just last month, ISIS inspired terrorist attacks on three different continents on a single day. Many in Congress and the Obama administration have routinely condemned the meat cleaver approach to cutting our defense, yet sequestration has been in effect sinc

A flag burns in Brooklyn, N.Y.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE   A flag burns in Brooklyn American Legion, Citizens Flag Alliance disgusted by anarchist group's demonstration and the message behind it. INDIANAPOLIS (July 2, 2015) –  American Legion National Commander Michael D. Helm and Citizens Flag Alliance (CFA) Chairman Richard Parker have news for members of Congress who resist support of a U.S. flag protection amendment on the grounds that no one burns flags anymore. Wednesday evening in Brooklyn, NY, an anarchist group that wants to strip the New York Police Department of its authority and weapons, burned a U.S. flag and a confederate flag that the protestors described as "symbols of oppression." "First of all, it is within the rights of this admittedly anti-American group to burn our flag in protest, thanks to a highly unpopular Supreme Court ruling in 1989," Helm said. "It may be within their rights, but that does not make it right. As a veteran, I am disgusted by it,
