The American Legion: Let Court Decide on Bergdahl

The American Legion: Let Court Decide on Bergdahl
INDIANAPOLIS (March 25, 2015) – The leader of the nation's largest veterans service organization reiterated his concerns about the circumstances leading to the release of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl but is reserving judgment about his guilt or innocence until the legal process concludes.
"From the beginning, The American Legion has expressed its strong concerns about negotiating deals with terrorists. While we do not believe in leaving any U.S. military personnel behind, we also don't want to recklessly endanger Americans by creating incentives for future kidnappings and other terrorist acts," American Legion National Commander Michael D. Helm said. "As a U.S. citizen and soldier, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is entitled to due process. A judge or a jury of his peers should decide his guilt or innocence. This is a process that the Taliban and other like-minded terrorist groups refuse to extend to anyone under their control. If Sgt. Bergdahl is found guilty, he must be punished accordingly."
With a current membership of 2.3-million wartime veterans, The American Legion was founded in 1919 on the four pillars of a strong national security, veterans affairs, Americanism, and youth programs. Legionnaires work for the betterment of their communities through nearly 14,000 posts across the nation.

Concerned about veterans homelessness, American Legion takes to the streets of L.A.

Concerned about veterans homelessness, American Legion takes to the streets of L.A.

WASHINGTON (March 23, 2015) – The American Legion is taking to the streets of Los Angeles to lend a helping hand to that city's population of homeless veterans.

A team of Legion experts from the nation's capital is in the City of Angels this week, holding a March 23 town hall meeting for veterans, meeting with Department of Veterans Affairs staff at the local VA hospital and regional office, and reaching out to the city's homeless veterans – reportedly one of the largest in America.

"We are eager to see if VA is back on track with its West Los Angeles campus, and will eventually make more living quarters and services available to homeless veterans," said Verna Jones, executive director of The American Legion in Washington, D.C. "But that will take time and these men and women on the streets, who served our country honorably, need immediate assistance."

VA came under fire for allowing its West Los Angeles campus to lease property and facilities to private companies and organizations that had nothing to do with assisting veterans.

Jones said that she, her staff members, and American Legion volunteers will gather at 6 p.m. on March 25 at Cloud Break Communities on 725 S. Hindry Ave. in Inglewood, Calif. From there, they will head into the streets to help homeless veterans get access to VA benefits they have earned through military service.

The American Legion operates many residences for homeless veterans across the country, and its Veterans Employment & Education Division in Washington advocates for homeless veterans on Capitol Hill.

American Legion National Commander Michael D. Helm comments on former Phoenix VAMC Director keeping her bonus

"Sharon Helman is apparently a person without shame," said Michael D. Helm, national commander of The American Legion. "She presided over a scandalous system in Phoenix, linked to the deaths of many patients, yet she fought to recover a bonus that never should have been hers in the first place. Instead of chasing after money, Helman ought to be chasing down every family who lost loved ones on her watch – and apologizing to them for her dereliction of duty."

Commander Helm response to emails sent by VA employee at Roudebush VAMC

"The American Legion takes health care for veterans very seriously," said Michael D. Helm, the organization's national commander. "It is essential that VA fosters a proper organizational culture, and that its workers do not take their responsibilities lightly. Mental health concerns affect the lives of veterans every day, and sometimes end their lives. We expect Secretary McDonald to act appropriately in this matter. Veterans suffering from TBI and PTSD should not be held up to ridicule."
