"Grand Rapids Veterans' Home" In case you haven't been keeping up with the news on this subject a recent state audit found shoddy conditions, lack of staff, and abuse of our fellow veterans. Jeff Barnes, head of the MVAA has resigned. There are a couple of articles on this, one the Detroit Free Press, the other on Michigan Radio. Find out what is going on!
"Free Legal Services" The Legal Aid & Defender Association, Inc., is hosting numerous (17 to be exact) free legal clinics (priority for vets) in both Oakland & Macomb counties for the next 6 months, all starting at 10AM. "VA Golden Age Games coming to Detroit" The VA Golden Age Games are coming to Detroit in July 2016. This will be open to all veterans that are enrolled in the VA Health System. To get a sneak peek see early flyer or visit their new website!
"Vietnam Veterans 50th Anniversary Video" The Vietnam 50 Anniversary Commission has released a video about Vietnam and those that served. This video can be seen here.

"Saturday, February 27, 2016" Last Day Dog Rescue is hosting a public adoption event & fund raiser with no fees for veterans at the Wayne Ford Civic League, 1661 N Wayne Rd, Westland, from 10 AM till 3PM. All donations will help this program that supplies dogs for service men/women with special needs. As a note, this event is not part of the Pets 4 Vets group. "Saturday, February 27, 2016 (NEW)" The Legal Aid & Defenders Officer is hosting an Expungement Fair downtown to help veterans with some minor criminal offenses on their record. You must register in advance. The fair runs from 9AM till 1PM, but you need to call or email to find out where. Call Karen at 313-967-5881 or email at karen@writeidea.org. See flyer for more info.
"Tuesday, March 1, 2016" Donut Dolly (Ms Joann Puffer Kotcher) is having a book signing at the Lapeer Rotary Club, 425 County Center St, Lepeer, starting at Noon. Her book about her time in Vietnam is now in its second printing. For more info & reservations contact Mary at 810-272-7202.
"Wednesday, March 2, 2016 (NEW)" The Yankee Air Museum is hosting another in their free lecture series about WW II at their facility at Willow Run Airport, 7PM, in the General Purpose Room. Today's lecture will be on the airport itself, given by Historian Randy Hotton.
"Friday, March 4, 2016" USA Hockey Arena, along with the Ann Arbor VA Hospital, are inviting all veterans to a free "Welcome HomeCelebration" Hockey Game at the USA Hockey Arena, 14900 N Beck Rd, Plymouth, starting at 5PM. Each vet can receive 5 tickets. For more info and to RSVP call Migon at 734-845-3429 or see flyer. This is all part of a Veterans Appreciation Week hosted by the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor. Besides the hockey game there are other events so see this flyer for those.
"Saturday, March 5, 2016" The Detroit VA John Dingell Hospital is hosting a Veterans Job Fair, along with Hiring Our Heroes of the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation, at the hospital, 4646 John R, Detroit, from 10:30AM till 1:30PM, with a employment workshop at 8:30AM. "Saturday, March 5, 2016" The VFW & UAW Local 5960 in Lake Orion are holding their annual Veteran Benefit Awareness Classes at their hall at 180 E Silverbell Rd, Lake Orion, starting at 9AM. This is a two day class with the second session on the following Saturday, March 12th. Learn about benefits you might be owed and how to help others. "Sunday, March 6, 2016 (NEW)" The Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society is hosting another in their lecture series on WW II with a book signing by Elizabeth Clemens, a book on Detroit in the war. Museum is located at 16600 Stephens Rd, Eastpointe, starting at 2PM. Admission by donation.
"Thursday, March 10, 2016 (NEW)" University of Detroit - Mercy Law School is hosting a Free Legal Aid Clinic covering the Social Security Disability. This will be held at Sts Peter & Paul Jesuit Church Sancturay, 438 St Antonie, Detroit, from 9 till 11AM. You must call in advance for a reservation to 313-596-0258. See flyer for more details.
"Thursday, March 10, 2016" Patriot Hockey has teamed up with the Detroit Red Wings to offer discount Red Wing tickets (tonight's game is against the Winnipeg Jets) with $10 of every ticket sold helping out the Fallen & Wounded Solider Fund, a local group in the Detroit area. There are 7 different games thru April that you can get this discount. All games at the Joe starting at 7:30.
