"Freedom Center @ North Terminal Now Open!" The Metro Airport North Freedom Center has oponed, at gate D-17. The hours of operation, however, are limited due to a lack of volunteers! We need you! You get free parking at the airport (handy when you go on vacation) and a chance to serve the troops as they pass thru. To volunteer visit the Freedom Center website and go to volunteer.
"Free Legal Services" The Legal Aid & Defender Association, Inc., is hosting numerous (17 to be exact) free legal clinics (priority for vets) in both Oakland & Macomb counties for the next 6 months, all starting at 10AM. "VA Golden Age Games coming to Detroit" The VA Golden Age Games are coming to Detroit in July 2016. This will be open to all veterans that are enrolled in the VA Health System. To get a sneak peek see early flyer or visit their new website!
"Buddy-2-Buddy MI Job Fairs" See attachment for the job fairs in MI for January. Again, B2B does not host these events, they simply compile the data.
EVENTS!
"Thursday, January 14, 2016" The Virtual Center of Excellence is hosting a Veterans Mental Health First Aid Training seminar at their location, 36300 Warren Rd, Westland, from 8:30 till 4:30PM, with lunch provided. This is a free program and very informative so for a complete description on what is covered and who should attend see attached flyer.
"Friday, January 15, 2016" Autumn Woods Health Care is hosting a Bowling Fund Raiser for Vets Returning Home at Bonanza Bowling Alley, 24600 Hoover, Warren, starting at 6:15PM. Cost is $15 at the door and includes bowling, shoes, pop, & pizza. For more info call Kim at 586-996-0445 or see flyer.
"Sunday, January 17, 2016 (NEW)" The Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society is presenting another in their series of lectures on WWII, this time on Amphibious Warfare in the Pacific. Guest speaker is Professor Bruce Zellers from Oakland University. The museum is located at 166600 Stephens, Eastpointe, with the event starting at 2PM, admission by donation. For more info see flyer.
"Tuesday, January 19, 2016" The MI Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, along with MSU Institute of Agriculture Technology, is starting a program for vets wanting to learn food production, processing, etc. This is an 8 week program and VA approved training. Affidavit Required in December I n late 2013 the state legislature and the governor enacted Public Act 161 of 2013, the Disabled Veterans Exemption.  This act gives qualifying disabled veterans or their unremarried surviving spouses a property tax exemption for their primary residence in Michigan.  For some qualifying veterans, not having to pay their property taxes could mean the difference of staying in their current home or having to move. Summary of Benefits The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will be mailing out to all veterans who receive benefits their ‘summary of benefits’ letter in the month of November and December.  The veteran will need that summary along with Michigan Treasury Form 5107.   The surviving unremarried spouse will need to provide the last summary of benefits letter or other documentation showing the qualifying veterans status at time of death and Form 5107. Legion opposes permanent extension of Choice program   WASHINGTON, May 27, 2016 — During a congressional hearing May 24, The American Legion delivered written and oral testimony regarding access to healthcare through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).   Director of Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Lou Celli addressed members of the Senate's Committee on Veterans' Affairs, highlighting the Legion's views on the Care Veterans Deserve Act of 2016.   If enacted, this Act would eliminate the VA's Veterans Choice Program (VCP) termination date, expand program eligibility, and extend certain operating hours of VA pharmacies and medical facilities.   "We stated at the time, and state here again today, that we never supported Choice becoming a permanent program," Celli said. War, Sacrifice and America's Veterans By Dale  Barnett While we can all rejoice this Veterans Day that the steady flow of U.S. casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan has slowed to a trickle, we must never forget the incredible sacrifice that America's defenders continue to make on our behalf. Such is the case of Master Sergeant Joshua Wheeler, who died leading a Delta Force rescue mission of ISIS hostages held in Iraq on Oct. 22.  A veteran of 14 combat deployments, his sacrifice is shared by four boys who are now fatherless and his wife, who became a widow far too early. But another important part of his legacy are the 70 hostages who were spared brutal executions by an enemy that is as ruthless as any that America has faced.
