The Michigan American Legion Seeks High
School Student Contestants for the Annual Oratorical Contest, Grand Prize
$18,000
LANSING (December 16, 2013) - “A
constitutional speech contest” The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge
and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. Since
1938, the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge
that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws,
the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties,
responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship. The program
has featured numerous politicians and prominent contestants over the years,
including former president candidate Alan Keyes and CNN anchor Lou Dobbs.
Deadline to register for the first level of competition is January 2nd,
2014; contestants must be sponsored by an American Legion Post. Contests will be held in 1 of 16 Districts
around the state or in 1 of 5 Zones. 9th,
10th, 11th, and 12th graders under the age of
20 attending an accredited High School program may compete. Registration applications are available by

The
American Legion has over 80,000 members in the State of Michigan and was
