American Legion supports legislation affecting nearly 1 million small business owners

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
American Legion supports legislation affecting
nearly 1 million small business owners
(Washington) The American Legion applauds legislation drafted by Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., that would include veterans in the Department of Transportation's Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) program.
"This legislation is necessary to provide parity for the nearly 1 million veterans who are small business owners seeking government contracts," said James Oxford, chairman of the Legion's Veterans Employment and Education Commission. "Veterans should not be placed at a disadvantage in competing with other government procurement programs."
It is incorrect to believe that the DBE program is relegated to road and infrastructure firms.
According to the Small Business Administration, veterans own 380,395 construction firms, 64,542 manufacturing companies and 414,519 businesses in the professional, scientific and technical services.

Currently, only half of the states meet their DBE goals. Adding veteran small businesses to this program would increase the pool of eligible firms at the states' disposal.  For states that already meet their goals, this bill does not affect them or the small business contractors they employ.
The U.S. House recently approved H.R. 1694 and passed it on to the Senate for consideration.
"The Fairness to Veterans for Infrastructure Investment Act is a bipartisan, common sense way to update legislation that redresses the exclusion of veteran small businesses at no cost to the taxpayer," Oxford said. "The American Legion encourages the Senate and the White House to level the playing field for these veterans by turning Rep. Fitzpatrick's legislation into law."

American Legion National Commander: Pause Import of Syrian Refugees

Legion National Commander: Pause Import of Syrian Refugees
INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 19, 2015) –  Concerned about the threats represented by ISIS and other jihadists, the head of the nation's largest veterans organization has called for at least a temporary halt to White House plans to allow thousands of  Syrian refugees to enter the United States.

"Unless a flawless vetting process can be established, The American Legion supports a pause in any process which seeks to accept an increase of refugees from the Middle East and Southwest Asia and anywhere anti-Americanism is suspected in the interest of national security," said American Legion National Commander Dale Barnett. "The American Legion maintains compassion for refugees; however the United States must ensure without any doubt that those who seek to destroy our American way of life are not hiding among innocent refugees. There are still too many unanswered questions about what led to the cowardly and heinous attacks in Paris last week. We should not increase the risk of such an attack occurring here."

Barnett pointed out that FBI Director James Comey has not been able to provide assurances that the United States currently has an adequate vetting process.

"And so if someone has never made a ripple in the pond in Syria in a way that would get their identity or their interest reflected in our database, we can query our database until the cows come home, but there will be nothing showing up because we have no record of them," Comey told a congressional committee in October.

With a current membership of 2.2 million wartime veterans, The American Legion was founded in 1919 on the four pillars of a strong national security, veterans affairs, Americanism, and youth programs. Legionnaires work for the betterment of their communities through nearly 14,000 posts across the nation.

#Veterans Day Editorial: War, Sacrifice and America's Veterans

War, Sacrifice and America's Veterans
By Dale  Barnett
While we can all rejoice this Veterans Day that the steady flow of U.S. casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan has slowed to a trickle, we must never forget the incredible sacrifice that America's defenders continue to make on our behalf.
Such is the case of Master Sergeant Joshua Wheeler, who died leading a Delta Force rescue mission of ISIS hostages held in Iraq on Oct. 22.  A veteran of 14 combat deployments, his sacrifice is shared by four boys who are now fatherless and his wife, who became a widow far too early. But another important part of his legacy are the 70 hostages who were spared brutal executions by an enemy that is as ruthless as any that America has faced.
The willingness to face pain and death so others can be spared isn't unique to just the fallen.  Consider the case of two American veterans and their longtime friend when they bravely stopped a terrorist attack aboard a train bound for Paris this summer.
Airman First Class Spencer Stone, Army Specialist Alek Skarlatos and Anthony Salder could have run from the danger when a heavily armed gunman boarded the train.
Instead, Specialist Skarlatos said, "Let's go," as the men ran toward a future that could have easily meant instant death or maiming for them and all of the other innocent people within range.
Fortunately, this story is remembered not for the horrific tragedy that nearly happened but for the heroism that did. Even after enduring serious stab wounds that were inflicted as he disarmed the gunman, Airman Stone administered life-saving first aid to a passenger that was shot.
The terrorist was carrying 270 rounds of ammunition. But because of the actions of these three young Americans, and two Europeans who assisted them,  the death toll aboard the train was zero.
There is also the incredible story of Chris Mintz. As others were understandably fleeing from a mass shooting at Oregon's Umpqua Community College on Oct. 1, the 30-year-old former Army infantryman bravely confronted the gunman at a classroom door, as he attempted to save others who were inside. Mr. Mintz survived the attack and continues to recover after being shot five times.
These stories are inspiring, but certainly not surprising to me. As national commander of The American Legion, I meet veterans all of the time who have demonstrated tremendous heroism yet blend in our communities without fanfare.
There are many ways to thank the men and women who have served in our Armed Forces, but I cannot think of a better method of showing gratitude than to hire one. Employers who make this smart decision will usually benefit from the discipline, skills and loyalty that are found abundantly in today's military.
Isn't it likely that people who have survived firefights in Afghanistan can handle whatever tasks are thrown their way at the office without too much stress?
My old classmate, C. Hughes Clark, summed up the humble nature of most veterans. "I can say without regret that I wouldn't have done anything different through it all, simply because it has given me a sense of accomplishment that I couldn't have accomplished any other way."

NEWS RELEASE: Secretary Johnson: We must remember #Veterans Day, sacrifices made by veterans

Media Release from Secretary of State Ruth Johnson

-- For immediate release --

Secretary Johnson: We must remember Veterans Day, sacrifices made by veterans

Branch Notices

Secretary of State offices will close for the Nov. 11 holiday

LANSING, Mich. - Secretary of State Ruth Johnson reminds residents that, in honor of Veterans Day, all Secretary of State offices and the Office of the Great Seal will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11. She also encouraged people to thank veterans for their service and sacrifice.
"I had a rare opportunity to visit our troops in the Middle East in 2012 to study how to make overseas voting easier for those in the military," Johnson said. "I will never forget the sense of honor, duty and patriotism that those young men and women displayed in spite of the terrible conditions. We owe everyone who has ever served this country a great debt for their service and sacrifice."
Michigan is home to more than 680,000 veterans, the 11th largest population nationally. Given the great number of veterans who live here, Johnson has unveiled a number of initiatives in support of them:
  • Creating a veteran designation on driver's licenses and state ID cards that helps identify Michigan veterans so they can be connected with the benefits they have earned and deserved.
  • Pushing new ways to ensure that military personnel have their votes counted on Election Day, such as successfully advocating to extend a federal write-in ballot to state and local races.
  • Waiving road tests for veterans applying for a Commercial Driver License to help their transition to civilian life if they have sufficient heavy truck experience in the military.
  • Offering more than two dozen military license plates that are available for veterans and their spouses, allowing them to display their service with pride.
"Patriotism and service run deep in Michigan," Johnson added. "This Veterans Day, take a moment to thank a vet for his or her service."
Because of the Veterans Day closure, Johnson recommends residents find alternate ways or days to get their Secretary of State business done.
Most people renewing license plates and driver's licenses and ID cards can do business online at www.ExpressSOS.com. For example, plates can be renewed at www.ExpressSOS.com with Print 'N Go technology that allows users to buy their tabs online and print a receipt to carry with them until their tabs arrive in the mail. Easy to follow instructions can be found with the renewal notice. In addition to renewing driver's licenses and plates online, www.ExpressSOS.com customers also can submit changes of address, renew or replace vehicle and watercraft registrations, request duplicate titles and enroll to be organ donors.
Licenses and plates that expire on a day when state offices are closed, such as a holiday or weekend, may be renewed the following day without penalty.
License plate tabs also can be renewed at Self-Service Stations, many of which are available around the clock. Visit the Branch Office Locator at www.michigan.gov/sos to find a Self-Service Station near you.
Originally known as Armistice Day, this special Nov. 11 holiday was first celebrated in 1919 to recognize the men and women who died during World War 1. In 1938, it became an official federal holiday. The name was changed to Veterans Day in the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War to commemorate veterans of all wars.
