Press Release - Legion: No amnesty for illegal immigrants #noamnesty #securetheborder

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Legion: No amnesty for illegal immigrants

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 20, 2014) -- The head of the nation's largest veterans service organization today questioned the wisdom of the White House putting politics above national security if it carries through with its plan to give amnesty to as many as 5 million illegal immigrants through an executive order.
"At a time when ISIS, al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations are killing innocent Americans, it makes no sense to let our guard down and send a message that the United States is an open, soft target," American Legion National Commander Michael D. Helm said. "A message was sent during the recent elections, and it clearly wasn't that Americans want amnesty. The American Legion urges the president in the strongest possible terms to put our security, and our citizens' interests and wishes, ahead of providing amnesty for millions of immigrants here illegally."
Helm – who is on a Far East tour that includes Vietnam, Laos and the Philippines – was just as adamant in stating that The American Legion fully supports legal immigration.  "The United States has benefited enormously from citizens who have obeyed the law in the journey to becoming Americans," he said. "There have been many prominent Legionnaires who legally migrated from other countries, including one of my recent predecessors, Fang Wong. I just visited with a new American citizen who is the wife of an American government official working in Laos. Her first husband was killed by communists in a re-education camp. She is one of the most patriotic Americans that I have met. My sister-in-law is a U.S. citizen from Panama.
"These patriotic Americans help make our country great. One common characteristic is that they have earned their citizenship the legal way. In fact, we have reached out to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to offer our help in bringing immigrants to full citizenship. Rewarding illegal immigration is a slap in the face to those who have obeyed the law and patiently went through the process."

CONGRATULATIONS!!-Message from Central Region National Vice Commnader

To all the Commanders, NEC Men and Adjutants of the Central Region,

I thank and applaud all of you for the hard work and effort, you and your Departments have put forth in reaching the "First Three Target Dates."  Please express my appreciation to your membership and retention teams for all they have accomplished.  As of the membership report for November 14, 2014, each of you have surpassed the 65% target for that date.  "THAT'S THE GOOD NEWS!!!!!

NOW THE REST OF THE STORY -- THE BAD NEWS!!!

The only Department of the Central Region, "AHEAD" in membership as of the same date last year, is Michigan and I really thank you for that effort.

The other eight Departments are a total of 13,480 members behind the same date last year.  I urge all of you to increase your efforts over the next 26 days (the next target is 75% on December 10, 2014) and focus your attention on beating that goal and matching or beating your last years membership numbers, on the same date.

This is the time of year when it becomes even harder to get membership, so work "smarter and use all the resources that are at your disposal."  REMEMBER  -- JUST ASK  -- THEN  -- FOLLOW UP!

Thank you for all you do for the American Legion, the veterans and your communities.  Your efforts are truly appreciated by many.

Still Serving,

Bill Bryant, Nat. Vice Cmdr.

American Indian and Native Hawiian and Alaskan Veterans Survey

I am a Cherokee Veteran of Iraq and current graduate student (Counseling Psychology Program), who is carrying out a survey on Native American veterans, and their perceptions of and attitudes towards Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This survey has met exemption criteria from Washington State University’s Institutional Review Board. It is my belief that if we as Native people speak as a group through this survey, places that provide veteran services for PTSD like the V.A. and I.H.S. will listen and will add our suggestions and preferences for treatment/healing to programs intended to help Native Veterans. I am asking for your assistance in spreading the word about our survey among your organization, friends from the service or any other interested groups or individuals.

The survey is open to anyone who is Native American and who has served in the military. They do not need to have been deployed or to have PTSD to participate in the survey. Below is a letter with more information about the survey and a link to the online version of the survey (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/nativeveterans). Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Greg Urquhart

Hello,
We would like to request your participation with a survey for Native American veterans who may have experienced combat-related stress or know others who have. Our intent with this survey is to increase the body of knowledge about Native American veterans and their attitudes and perceptions towards PTSD and its treatment.  This information will contribute to increasing the body of knowledge about Native American Veterans. Your answers on the survey will be helpful to us in achieving this goal. The Washington State University Institutional Review Board has certified the study as meeting exempt status. All participants and their responses will be kept confidential.
The research team includes graduate students in counseling psychology at Washington State University, several of whom are Native American veterans and individuals experienced in working with veterans and Native American veterans. This study is being supervised by Dr. Phyllis Erdman, Professor in counseling psychology at Washington State University. We are interested in this area because of our personal experience with military service and a commitment to helping those who may suffer from the effects of combat.
We appreciate your time and thank you in advance for your help.  Also, if you know of others who may be interested in this survey please feel free to forward the link to them. Please click below to access the survey. If you have questions regarding this request, you may contact Greg Urquhart at (greg.urquhart@wsu.edu).

Sincerely,
